The Cutters and Lighters I'd Actually Buy

Updated 2026-08-18 · by Eric

If you're buying your first setup today: the Vertigo Hawk and whatever it costs to not overthink the cutter yet. If you're upgrading: the Xikar XO and the Guevara Lux. Everything below comes from a full review on this site... no gear appears here that I haven't carried and used.

Gear roundups are usually catalogs... every product gets a blurb, every blurb finds something nice to say, and somehow nothing ever loses. This page works differently. Nine pieces of cutting and lighting gear have been through full reviews here, each one used for months, most bought with my own money. Some won. Some lost. The cards pull live from the reviews, so what you see is the actual verdict, not a rewritten-for-the-roundup version.

Cutters

My daily cutter, and the reason I stopped shopping:

Xikar XO cutter in gunmetal, closed, round body with exposed screws on a stone surface
Buy Again$85 to $100 street

Xikar XO Cutter Review (Gunmetal)

The Xikar XO cutter is a Buy Again at $85 to $100 street... it walked in four months ago and retired every other cutter I own.

The V-cut I'd point you at if the V-cut is your thing... with the caveat that I've drifted back to straight cuts myself:

Xikar VX2 V-cut cutter closed, silver body with the polished V-cut bowl, standing on a stone hearth
Buy Again$45 to $55 street

Xikar VX2 V-Cut Cutter Review

The Xikar VX2 V-cutter is a Buy Again at $45 to $55 street... if the V-cut is your regular cut.

And the two that didn't make it. The Xi2 was my first real cutter and it taught me a lot, just not at that price. The Colibri is half a great tool:

Xikar Xi2 Hero Series cutter held in hand, black and gray American flag graphic with stars and stripes
Wouldn't Buy$59.99 street

Xikar Xi2 Cutter Review (Hero Series)

The Xikar Xi2 Hero Series cutter is a Wouldn't Buy at $60 street... not at Hero Series money.

Colibri SV-Cut cutter closed, V-cut side facing, black knurled body with chrome ends on a stone hearth
Wouldn't Buy$75 street

Colibri SV-Cut Cutter Review (Black & Chrome)

The Colibri SV-Cut cutter is a Wouldn't Buy at $75 street... half of this cutter is excellent, and the half I'd actually reach for keeps pinching my...

Lighters

The one I'd hand a beginner first:

Vertigo Hawk triple jet flame lighter standing upright, black and blue body with the cap closed and VERTIGO branding on the side
Buy Again$9.99 street

Vertigo Hawk Triple Jet Flame Lighter Review

The Vertigo Hawk triple jet lighter is a Buy Again at about $10 street... and if you're just getting into cigars, this is the one I'd hand you first.

The one that actually lights most of my cigars... a $20 single jet that has never once failed me:

The Filthy Viking Toro resting across the top of the Guevara Lux single-flame lighter, worn silver metal body
Buy Again$19.99 street

Guevara Lux Single-Flame Lighter Review (1121D)

The Guevara Lux single-flame lighter is a Buy Again at about $20 street... in a heartbeat, and I'm probably buying its double-jet brother next.

Two more that earned their keep, one practical and one that's just fun to use:

A lit My Father Flor de las Antillas Toro resting across the top of the Jetline Rubanno single-flame lighter, brushed gunmetal top over a smoked plastic fuel tank on a stone surface
Buy Again$21.95 street

Jetline Rubanno Single-Flame Lighter Review

The Jetline Rubanno single-flame lighter is a Buy Again at $21.95 street... it's a keeper, just not the one my hand grabs first.

2026-07-05

Jetline Mr. Fatboy quad torch table lighter standing upright, smoked translucent fuel tank and large curved lid
Buy Again$30 to $33 street

Jetline Mr. Fatboy Quad Torch Review

The Jetline Mr. Fatboy quad torch is a Buy Again at $30 to $33 street... at full retail, without blinking.

2026-07-11

And the one I'd skip:

Rockwell quad torch pocket lighter standing upright, black plastic body with clear fuel tank window and Rockwell branding
Wouldn't Buy$23.50 street

Rockwell Quad Torch Lighter Review

The Rockwell quad torch is a Wouldn't Buy at $23.50 street... and I never have bought one, which is kind of the point.

How to read all this

Two patterns from a year of gear. First, jet count is marketing... I light almost everything with a single flame, and the only thing more jets ever bought me was a button too hot to touch by the end of the light. Second, the price-performance curve flattens fast. The gap between a $10 lighter and a $20 lighter is real. The gap between $20 and $80 is mostly pocket jewelry. Spend the difference on cigars.

If you're starting from zero, the beginner kit page makes the full minimal-spend case, including why you don't need half of what the accessory wall wants to sell you. And if a cut goes wrong anyway, how to cut a cigar covers the recovery.
